Estée Lauder Companies (ELC), Beiersdorf and Puig are among the beauty companies owed millions of dollars by Saks Global after the US luxury retailer filed for bankruptcy protection.
Creditors named in the voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, made in a US court on 14 January, also include Chanel, Kering, LVMH and Europerfumes.
Saks Global owns department stores Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks OFF 5TH, Last Call and Horchow, which will continue trading during the bankruptcy proceedings.
The luxury group has secured US$1.75bn to turn things around, but is ”evaluating its operational footprint to invest resources where it has the greatest long-term growth potential” as part of the Chapter 11 process, the company said in a statement.
This approach “reflects an effort to focus the business in areas where the company’s luxury retail brands are best positioned for sustainable growth”, it continued in the statement.
Documents from Saks Global’s Chapter 11 filing reveal that luxury fashion and beauty brand Chanel is among the 30 largest unsecured creditors with $136m outstanding.
That is followed by Kering, owner of luxury houses Gucci and Saint Laurent, which is owed $59.9m.
ELC, which owns dozens of beauty brands such as MAC Cosmetics, Clinique and Jo Malone London, is the seventeenth largest creditor with $16m outstanding.
Beiersdorf, the German conglomerate behind luxury skin care line La Prairie and premium brand Chantecaille, is the eleventh largest creditor with $22.2m outstanding.
Puig, the owner of make-up giant Charlotte Tilbury and fragrance brands Carolina Herrera, Rabanne and Penhaligon’s, is owed $12m and ranked eighteenth.
Among the beauty and fashion brands, technology companies Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, and Google are named as creditors.
