A presentation of the novel and acclaimed cosmetic ingredients for 2014, as John Woodruff reports

This year’s in-cosmetics was held in Hamburg from 1-3 April, and there were many presentations under the general title of innovation seminars, featuring speakers from various companies talking about new ingredients and product ideas. As always at these events, presentations take place in different venues and often overlap, so what follows is a personal overview of the presentations I was able to attend.

A four-person panel discussed innovation in skin care technology. Barbara Brockway, as current President of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists, talked about high shear emulsification and how process changes can change the way we formulate. High shear emulsification removes the need for an emulsifier and is capable of creating a soft cream from a mixture of petrolatum and water and, because it disrupts microbial cells, the process is aseptic. Steve Barton of Skin Thinking discussed communication between the scientists that create products and the consumer that uses them, and “joining the dots and making sense of what we know to educate writers on cosmetics in magazines and online”.
