The debate has sparked mixed reactions from influencers and consumers

Make-up artist Patrick Ta has responded to recent criticism over the US$42 price of his new Major Dimension Eye Illusion Eyeshadow Duos.

He took to TikTok on 26 October to share the product’s high-end formulation and components that he says justify the premium cost.

“These are not your normal eyeshadows,” Ta explained, noting that the duo is crafted using a special “slurry” formula made in Italy, which is baked rather than pressed and composed of “100% pearl” with no filler pigments.

This approach, he says, enhances the shadow’s depth and reflective quality.

“I have yet to be able to find a pearl that looks like this, applies like this and stays like this when you put it on,” Ta continued.

In defending the pricing, Ta drew comparisons with other high-end single eyeshadows, such as MAC Dazzle Shadow Extreme and Too Faced’s Disco Crush Glitter, each of which costs $30 per shade.

He emphasised that none of these products include features like a mirror, as his does, which contributes to the duo’s higher price point.

“All of these things drive up the cost,” he stated.

However, industry influencers offered mixed reactions to the price.

Make-up artist and beauty influencer Mikayla Nogueira expressed surprise, saying: “$42 for two eyeshadows is insane.”

Nogueira compared Ta’s product to more affordable options, such as e.l.f. cosmetics’ Fine as Fleck glitter eyeshadows.

Make-up artist Jeffree Star, acknowledged the formula’s quality, describing it as “pure pigment, pure diamonds,” and commented on its luxury appeal.

“Could it be chopped down a few dollars? Yes,” Star noted, adding that while he respects Ta’s commitment to premium formulations, he understands consumer price sensitivity.

Star also said: “I'm not here to be Patrick Ta’s saviour, but he's a boujee, luxury brand, and that's the lane he wants to stay in.”

One TikTok user supported Ta’s stance, commenting: “I don’t get why people complain about high-end products being pricey, if you want quality, you pay.”

Meanwhile, others expressed appreciation for Ta’s transparency, with one follower writing, “Thank you for explaining the ‘why’ and being kind with your delivery, I'm now a forever Patrick Ta customer!”

Ta concluded that he is confident that the formulation’s performance will validate the cost to consumers.

“At the end of the day, the formula will speak for itself,” he said.
