Kylie Cosmetics accused of copycat Holiday campaign

The brand's Instagram post featuring a woman with gold fingers and dark red lips has sparked debate on social media

An LA-based make-up artist has accused Kylie Jenner of copycat tactics in her new Kylie Cosmetics Holiday campaign.

Vlada Haggerty claimed that Jenner’s Instagram post campaign promoting her Yellow Gold Creme shadow and Mary Jo, Merry and Vixen Lip Kits is an imitation of a shoot that she carried out a few months ago.

On her own Instagram feed, Haggerty published a post with an image from the shoot she worked on alongside Jenner’s. The photographs both feature a close-up image of a woman with her hands covering her eyes and gold eyeshadow on her fingers. The woman in both images has dark red lips, with her mouth slightly open.

Haggerty wrote: “Really @kyliecosmetics? Haven't you gotten enough ‘inspiration’ from me already? Left is a the work @juliakuzmenko, @brittrafuson and I shot a few months ago and right is @kyliecosmetics new campaign.”

The post received 22.8k likes with Instagram users commenting in support of both Haggerty and Jenner.

Jenner did not reply to Haggerty on Instagram. She did go on to post other images of her Holiday collection, due to launch on 21 November, with a focus on her popular Lip Kits.

This is the second time Haggerty has taken issue with Jenner’s choice of imagery. In 2015, Haggerty contacted Kylie Cosmetics through Instagram after her artwork was re-posted on the brand’s feed without a credit.

She told Refinery 29 that the caption was “finally edited” to say “inspo @vladamua #lipkitbykylie”, but Haggerty said this still implied the image belonged to the brand and the hashtag implied an affiliation.
