Dior is adding a woody extrait de parfum to its bestselling men’s fragrance franchise Sauvage.
Created by Dior’s Perfume Creation Director Francis Kurkdjian, Sauvage Extrait launches in August and is characterised by a woody chiaroscuro duality, which “gains new intensity as extreme as it is original”.
Oud wood is the backbone of Sauvage Extrait’s fougère – the first time the ingredient has been used in the French luxury house’s top men’s franchise, which is fronted by actor Johnny Depp.
It is complemented with smoky and earthy nuances, and resinous and animalic tones.
Due to demand, the entry deadline for the Pure Beauty Awards has been extended until 24 July! Don't miss your chance to gain recognition from industry experts and consumers alike. Click here for more information.
It claims to have “record concentration levels” in a composition that “demands perfect balance, resulting from a masterful command of olfactory form”, read a statement from the company.
Dior launched its Sauvage men’s fragrance – which blends bergamot, French lavender and ambroxan – in 2015.
Over the past 11 years, Sauvage has grown into a wider franchise which comprises an eau de toilette, elixir, eau de parfum and eau forte.
By developing an extrait de parfum for Sauvage, Kurkdjian said it celebrates perfumery's “original and noble” olfactory form, which emerged in the early 19th century.

Dior's Sauvage Extrait
"Sauvage is a fascinating composition, a classic ‘fougère’ structure that is both immediately approachable, yet, richly nuanced,” said Kurkdjian.
“It reveals a great composition that stimulates the imagination and makes you want to push all the boundaries, so that is what we did.
“With Sauvage Extrait, I wanted to take up the challenge of creating absolute nobility in a men's extrait.
“Because an extrait is quite simply the ultimate expression of a fragrance – its quintessence and its culmination.”
After its raw materials are blended, Sauvage Extrait’s formula requires six weeks of maturation and maceration.
The signature oud wood sourced in the extrait is sourced from a certified supplier in Vietnam.
Kurkdjian said that by elevating the woody structure of Sauvage, it brought a new tonality to its composition, “through depth as much as power”.
He added: “Sauvage Extrait is the height of luxury, playing with the limits of noble raw material concentrations – the very principle of an extract.
“The ultimate expression of intensity and formulation precision, it diffuses a surprising power.
“Its imprint lingers on and on... to achieve this density, I created a chiaroscuro structure of intense, contrasting woody notes.”
Dior Sauvage Extrait launches on 6 August on dior.com. RRP is £153 for 50ml.
