YSL blocks Robbie Williams new skin care brand over trademark

The beauty giant has complained to the IPO that the singer’s brand name Hopeium is too close to its Black Opium Eau de Parfum

British singer Robbie Williams’ plans to launch a skin care brand has been blocked by beauty giant Yves Saint Laurent (YSL).

YSL claimed the ‘Angel’ singer’s proposed moniker Hopeium is too similar to its fragrance line Black Opium.

The L’Oréal-licenced brand has formally raised an objection with the UK government's Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

Williams submitted a UK and US trademark application for new beauty brand Hopeium in April.

The collection is said to include cleansers, serums, moisturisers and fragrances.

YSL’s objection could cause problems for the ex-Take That star.

“This has put a spanner in the works for Robbie," a source told The Sun newspaper.

“Nothing can proceed until a decision has been reached.

“It could be costly if he has to go back to the drawing board when it comes to the name because that could impact the whole brand and how it is marketed.

“The name [Hopeium] means having an irrational sense of optimism, which is very Robbie.”

The source added: “YSL feels it has a case if Robbie is selling similar products.

“Its intervention has caused headaches all around.”

Cosmetics Business has reached out to YSL for comment.

Another blow for the celebrity beauty brand sector

Williams' brand name issue is the latest knockback the celebrity beauty brand sector has faced this year.

Hailey Bieber's brand Rhode Skin also faced a trademark fiasco

Fashion label Rhode-NYC filed a lawsuit against the model in June.

It alleged she was infringing upon its trademark for 'Rhode'.

A New York federal court has allowed Bieber to continue using the name Rhode for her new skin care brand.
