Supergoop! founder Holly Thaggard has officially exited the beauty business.

Thaggard announced she is stepping away from the day-to-day governance of the sunscreen brand in a LinkedIn post, but said her “obsession with SPF will never fade”.

The former teacher launched the brand in 2005, following a close friend’s diagnosis with skin cancer.

Her intention was to help halt a skin cancer “epidemic” while also making SPF use more enjoyable.

“I started Supergoop! with a super dream: to stop a cancer epidemic by creating a sunscreen so clean, so efficacious and so fun that everyone, everywhere, would want to wear SPF every single day,” said Thaggard.

The growth fund of asset management firm Blackstone Group would then go on to acquire a majority stake in the sunscreen label in 2022.

The investment was used to fuel Supergoop!’s product innovation and help drive consumer behaviour change through education and brand marketing.

JLo Beauty co-founder Lisa Sequino was then named CEO in 2024.

She succeeded Amanda Baldwin, who took over as CEO of hair care brand Olaplex in 2024 after former chief executive JuE Wong exited the company in 2023.

Sequino was named as a co-founder of Jennifer Lopez’s JLo Beauty in 2022, two years after the American actress and singer launched her debut skin care line in December 2020.

Thaggard did not reveal what her next steps will be following the departure from Supergood!, but stated that “entrepreneurship runs deep in my DNA”.

“It has also been so incredibly fun to see our son [Will Thaggard] step up and dive into building something new, inspired by his grandfather’s wisdom: to do something different and to make the world a better place,” Thaggard added.

“I am so thrilled to see what awaits us as he makes his dream come to life.

“So stay tuned – this next chapter is just getting started, and it is going to make (super!).”
