Global shipments of aluminium aerosol cans by members of the International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Container Manufacturers (AEROBAL) declined 1.2% in 2021 to around 5.6 billion units.
While the deodorants end-use market remained roughly at 2020 levels, according to the association, the hair spray and sun care segments were weaker than in the previous year, as were the non-cosmetic segments for pharmaceutical products, disinfectants, and household and technical articles.
More encouragingly, deliveries for the hair mousses and shaving foams markets increased, alongside food, in some cases by double digits.
The slight decline in shipments was due to lower demand from the EU and the United Kingdom.
The North and South American markets were level with 2020, while deliveries to Asia and the Middle East increased.
Looking ahead to 2022, AEROBAL said it is ‘cautiously optimistic’, with order intake in the first quarter of 2022 boding well so far for aluminium aerosol can manufacturers.
However, the organisation stressed that by far the greatest concern for manufacturers is the war in Ukraine, and the accompanying uncertainty and upheavals in the markets.
