Albéa reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the New Plastics Economy

Published: 24-Oct-2019

Today the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the UN Environment Programme release the first New Plastics Economy Global Commitment progress report, showcasing their signatories’ efforts to combat plastic waste and pollution.

One year ago, in October 2018, Albéa was the first cosmetic packaging company to sign the Global Commitment. We are proud to be among the hundreds of signatories who contribute to its ambitious 2025 objectives towards a circular economy for plastics.

This in effect commits Albéa to making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, as well as reducing plastic usage where relevant and including Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) resins where possible.

In the course of one year, we have tripled our responsible packaging offering; we have joined the SPICE initiative that brings together players from the cosmetics industry to shape the future of sustainable packaging; we have published our first, voluntary Sustainable Development Report; we have announced a breakthrough co-development with L’Oréal; our Greenleaf II laminate tube has been certified by the APR (Association of Plastic Recyclers); and we have engaged our stakeholders in a conversation on circular beauty.

These initiatives demonstrate our company’s vision for Responsible Packaging: we will make our packaging solutions circular while ensuring they are safe for all and have a minimum impact on the environment.

This in turn translates into five priorities: to reduce, to reuse, to recycle, to include PCR and bio-based plastics.

All Albéa’s leading product categories, from tubes to makeup packaging via fragrance and lotion pumps, now have innovation roadmaps to ensure we deliver on our commitment to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, our stakeholders and the planet.

Because we believe in providing expertise and guidance to all our customers to help them reach their sustainability goals.

Gilles Swyngedauw, Vice-President CSR, Innovation & Marketing of Albéa, explains: “Albéa’s commitment to sustainability goes back 15 years and is reflected in our broad range of responsible packaging solutions. The focus until recently was on eco-designing lighter packaging, with less plastic and more Post-Consumer Recycled resins.

"Today we are accelerating development of recyclable and reusable packaging that contribute to circularity. By partnering with our customers, suppliers and all our stakeholders, we demonstrate our commitment to building circular packaging for tomorrow.”

We want to contribute to building a circular economy where plastics never becomes waste. Let’s act together to make this happen.
