In a move to expand its manufacturing capacity and capabilities in North America, packaging specialist HCP is to invest in a new 60,000 sq ft factory in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, about 15 minutes from the US border.

The company says the boom in eyes and mascara technology means its US manufacturing has grown considerably in the last 12 months and the trend is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. Supply chain considerations and rising transit costs are increasingly encouraging suppliers to develop and expand factories on a localised basis in close proximity to customers’ filling operations,” says HCP.

Manufacturing capabilities at the new facility will include injection molding, injection blow molding, UV lacquering, vacuum metallising, decoration and assembly.

Fully operational during the first quarter of 2010, the site will employ around 130 people. The company also plans to transfer some activities from its Hinsdale, New Hampshire, US and Shanghai, PRC facilities to the new factory.

“The Reynosa factory will provide an excellent platform in support of our sales growth initiatives in this region,” comments Steve Levine, president, HCP USA Inc.
