The European Parliament has questioned the effectiveness of recently approved tough rules insisting non-EU airports abide by mandated security standards for passengers to transfer home carrying duty-free perfumes (and other liquids) through EU airports. In a formal resolution, it asked the European Commission to urgently review the system and if no further justification could be found, these new rules should be repealed.
Its motion said security measures should be "realistically" designed to minimise the risk and not be "disproportionate". MEPs recognised the "substantial inconvenience and disruption" caused to passengers, especially those in transit. Some MEPs opposed this line though - Scottish Labour MEP David Martin said: “It is clear that there is a serious and more subtle threat to airport security than we have ever faced.”
