The French cosmetics and perfumes group Clarins has reported a 1.8% downturn in first half 2008 sales to €486m.

The company says the drop is due to a fall in European sales and unfavourable exchange rates. Europe, the company adds, is entering a difficult phase and expects its own growth in 2008 to be at the bottom end of the forecast range of 4% to 6%. Clarins notes that the cosmetics market has stagnated in volume terms while competition has become intense, especially in the perfumes sector.
