Cosmetics company research teams have until February 2010 to bid for €50m worth of funding for projects developing new animal-free safety test methods for cosmetics ingredients.
With the European Commission and EU cosmetics federation Colipa both offering €25m, Brussels is promoting its priorities for funding: developing organ-simulating devices; using human-based target cells; defining new toxicological endpoints and intermediate markers; computer modelling techniques; systems biology; integrated data analysis; and scientific services. A key issue will be "repeated dose systemic toxicity" regarding the repeated use of substances over a long period, of critical importance to the cosmetics sector.
