Speciality ingredients supplier BASF has been awarded the Society of Cosmetic Chemist’s (SCC) prestigious Allan B Black award for a study into the foundation coverage needs of women with ethnic skin types. The paper entitled Complex Effect Pigments: Innovative Solutions for Ethnic Color found that the colour reflection response differs between darker and lighter skin tones.
For instance, to counteract redness in lighter skin green-reflecting pigments can be used, while red-reflecting pigments can be used on darker skin tones. BASF says its effect pigments can help achieve the desired result thanks to their layered structure, which reflects different colours upon exposure to light.
“Conventional foundation is supposed to add colour to the skin but skin that already has plenty of colour doesn’t actually need that,” said Leila Song, a member of the study team. “Our studies show how our effect pigments enhance the natural skin tone while at the same time concealing any blemishes.”
