Amika has announced the voluntary recall of one of its products after it failed to meet regulatory requirements.
The Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo was recalled on 6 January.
Amika Mirrorball shampoos from 2023 and 2024 are included in the recall.
The hair care brand said in a statement: “We are initiating a voluntary recall of amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant Shampoo, no other Amika products are affected by this voluntary recall.
“We have been monitoring recent feedback citing change in odor and in rare cases, temporary irritation. There have been no reported serious adverse health events associated with using this product.
“We initiated this recall after determining that various production batches at our third-party manufacturing site do not meet our stringent quality standards, due to the presence or potential presence of a bacterium called P. gergoviae.”
Retailers such as TKmaxx, Sephora and Cult Beauty have all recalled the product.
Amika advised customers to stop using the product immediately, even if the product does not appear to have an odour or quality issue.
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), said: “The product poses a microbiological risk as it could have a change in odour and in rare cases cause temporary irritation due to the presence or potential presence of the bacterium P. gergoviae.”
Although infections in healthy individuals are rare, P. gergoviae can cause severe infections in people with weakened immune systems, chronic illnesses, or those undergoing surgical procedures.
The bacterium has been linked to respiratory diseases, urinary tract infections, eye infections and sepsis.
