With a lack of new UV absorbers, the focus of this feature will be on maximising the efficacy of existing ingredients and mitigating the deleterious effects of solar radiation.

Sunscreens can be organic (either water- or oil-soluble) or inorganic particulates. For successful formulation, both categories need to be evenly distributed in a surface film on the skin, and be stable and water resistant.

In addition, if organic, there may be problems of solubility. Meanwhile, if particulate, complete dispersion is required and agglomeration of particles must be avoided.
