The zero emissions facility in Germany incorporates the principles of a ‘circular economy’ and highlights the Swiss brand’s commitment to sustainability

Weleda has opened a €90m state-of-the-art zero emissions logistics centre in Germany to emphasise the brand’s “commitment to sustainability”.

The 72,000sqm ‘Cradle Campus’ in Schwäbisch Gmünd is an 100% emission-free facility, powered by solar and geothermal energy, which incorporates “circular economy principles”.

It consolidates the skin care brand’s six logistic locations into one, streamlining operations to serve 47 countries, processing up to 10,000 orders daily.

The campus, designed by architects Michelgroup, has been built primarily from locally sourced timber and rammed earth.

It is powered by solar energy, with 10,000 photovoltaic modules on the roof and facades.

Biodiversity is being fostered in the facility’s outdoor spaces, with orchard meadows, wild fruit hedges and a juniper heath.

“The Cradle Campus aligns perfectly with the Weleda strategy. It stands for responsible growth”, said Tina Müller, CEO of Weleda AG.

“Protecting our planet requires new ways of thinking and acting.

“It is not enough to simply do less harm to natural resources.

“We must operate regeneratively. Sustainability and growth are not opposing forces. Sustainability drives growth.”

Weleda has also digitalised its logistics processes and improved its order picking and shipping efficiency for customers through a fully automated high-bay warehouse.

Products manufactured at Weleda UK and destined for other Weleda companies around the globe, alongside products from Weleda Switzerland and Weleda Germany that are sold by Weleda UK, will pass through the logistics hub.
