The Sanctuary Spa in London's tourist mecca, Covent Garden has long been regarded as a true British beauty success story, so news that the spa is to close its doors next year after 36 years of trading will be met with sadness and a touch of nostalgia by both the beauty industry and the thousands of women who have passed through its treatment rooms and of course swung on its iconic swing.

Originally founded as a retreat for the ballerinas who performed at the nearby Royal Opera House by beauty maverick George Hammer, the women-only spa was billed as the world's first urban day spa when it opened. A subsequent product range was launched, which has enjoyed success in Boots and Debenhams stores in the UK and will continue to be retailed.
