Researchers at the Rockefeller University in New York, US, have discovered new details about how hair follicles are activated and how quiescent periods – states of inactivity or dormancy – are essential for maintaining stem cells’ rejuvenating activity over time.
In hair follicles, stem cells are known to be held in quiescent states intermittently unless their surroundings prompt them to become active again and regenerate. Elaine Fuchs, Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, reported on new insights into the biological signals that make hair follicle stem cells oscillate between states of quiescence and regenerative activity.
