Society of Cosmetic Chemists announces annual award winners

The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) is pleased to announce the awards that will be presented during the Society’s 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting, December 17-18, 2019 at the Sheraton NY Times Square.

MERIT AWARD: “Anthony O’Lenick (Siltech) is a name synonymous with volunteerism, distinguished leadership, and outstanding service to the cosmetics and personal care industry”, said Erica O’Grady, CAE, Executive Director/CEO of the Society.

“We are delighted to honor Tony this year with the Merit Award. During his 40-year membership, he has been a tireless champion of the SCC and its mission to advance cosmetic science.”

YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD, sponsored by Surfatech: Recognizing the Best Paper by a young scientist, under the age of 40, that was presented at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting. This award will be presented to Liyuan Ji (University of Cincinnati) for her paper entitled, ‘Mechanistic Understanding of the Effects of Air Pollution on Human Skin Health Using Innovative Human Skin Explant Mode’.

GREEN STAR AWARD sponsored by Colonial Chemical: Recognizing the formulator who has done outstanding work in green formulations during the previous 12-month period. This award will be presented to Cynthia Johnson (C-Care, LLC) for her Strawberry Cream Cleanser with Blue Light Protection.

SOCIETY OF COSMETIC CHEMISTS AWARD, sponsored by Hallstar: Recognizing the Best Paper presented at the 2018 SCC Annual Scientific Meeting that made the greatest scientific contribution to knowledge in the field of protecting against or ameliorating damage to human skin caused by exposure to UV radiation.

This award will be presented to Helen Yang (Amway) for her paper entitled, ‘Blue Light Science 101: Harmful or Helpful for The Skin?'

HANS A. SCHAEFFER AWARD, sponsored by Lonza: Recognizing the Most Innovative Paper presented at the 2018 SCC Annual Scientific Meeting. This award will be presented to Roger McMullen, PhD (Ashland) for his paper entitled, ‘Evaluation of the Surface Properties of Hair with Acoustic Analysis’.

JOSEPH P. CIAUDELLI AWARD, sponsored by Croda: Recognizing the Best Article appearing in the Journal of Cosmetic Science on the subject of hair care technology.

This award will be presented to father and son - Asao Yamauchi, Ph.D. & Kiyoshi Yamauchi, Ph.D. (both of Osaka Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology) for their article entitled, ‘New Aspects of the Structure of Human Scalp Hair-II: Tubular Structure and Material Flow Property of the Medulla’ which was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science (Vol. 69. No. 1).

SHAW MUDGE AWARD, sponsored by the Mudge Family: Recognizing the Best Paper presented at the 2018 SCC Annual Scientific Meeting. This award will be presented to Nadine Pernodet, PhD (The Estee Lauder Companies) for her paper entitled, ‘The New Frontiers of Innovation in the Cosmetic Industry’.

DES GODDARD AWARD: Recognizing the Most Innovative Paper on the topic of polymer science related to cosmetics or personal care presented at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting or published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science. This award will be presented to Hani Fares (Ashland) for his Journal Article entitled, ‘Investigating Film Properties of Polymers Used in Anhydrous Sunscreen Formulations Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (Sem): Polymer/Polymer Interactions and their Relation to Vapor Transmission’.
