LanzaTech’s technology converts various waste carbon sources, for example industrial emissions in China, to ethanol thanks to a proprietary biocatalyst.
As a result of its synthetic biology and modelling capabilities, LanzaTech can produce a variety of different chemicals through this process.
The research collaboration is expected to leverage LanzaTech’s synthetic biology capability and go beyond the production of ethanol, with the companies working together to establish novel pathways to key fragrance ingredients used across the Givaudan portfolio.

Givaudan marks the latest beauty industry partnership for LanzaTech, which is also working with Coty to transform the majority of the brand owner’s fragrances to sustainably-sourced ethanol by 2023.
It brought the first of its carbon-captured ethanol fragrances to market earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Beiersdorf’s Nivea became the first personal care conglomerate to launch a skin care product, Nivea Men’s new Climate Care Moisturizer, using recycled carbon dioxide in June.
