Sales of perfume products and cosmetics from specialised distribution outlets, independent shops and the major stores in France rose last year by 2.5% to €6.5bn, less than in 2006 when sales went up 5% and 2007 when they increased by 4%.

A report on the French market from the Precepta consultancy says fewer cosmetics and perfumes were bought in France last year and spending in the sector is expected to fall this year. Delphine David, cosmetics industry analyst for Precepta, said the perfumes, cosmetics, make-up and care product producers countered falling volumes by raising their prices. Growth through 2008 had been mainly price-driven. The report forecasts a further slowdown this year with growth in value terms of about 1.5% and a macro-economic recovery in the second half of the year.
