There are many materials claimed to soften and penetrate the outer layers of the stratum corneum (SC).
But if they are to deliver active ingredients deeper into the epidermis special delivery systems are used. This is further complicated if the active is prone to instability as it travels from a cosmetic product to its human target site. Often encapsulation is seen as the answer to both problems.
The encapsulation of active ingredients prevents incompatibility between different materials, or protects an active ingredient by its complete separation from the environment. For example, vitamins, polyphenols and flavonoids are protected against oxidative influences. It may also be used for the selective control of the release of an active ingredient or perfume.
