US colour standards company Pantone has revealed Emerald as the Colour of the Year for 2013.

US colour standards company Pantone has revealed Emerald as the Colour of the Year for 2013. The lush, green shade follows Tangerine Tango, which was Pantone's colour of the year for 2012. Previous colours included Honeysuckle (2011), Turquoise (2010) and Mimosa (2009).

Emerald green, said to promote "wellbeing, harmony and balance," according to Pantone, is also commonly associated with precious gems, giving the colour a luxury-feel.

"The most abundant hue in nature, the human eye sees more green than any other colour in the spectrum," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. "As it has throughout history, multifaceted Emerald continues to sparkle and fascinate. Symbolically, Emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal and rejuvenation, which is so important in today's complex world. This powerful and universally-appealing tone translates easily to both fashion and home interiors."
