Sustainably Sustainable
Sustainability is a theme at the heart of the conference. Public awareness about plastic waste is at an all-time high, and consumers are increasingly demanding environmentally-friendly products.
A study by Euromonitor International found that eco-friendly packaging is more important to consumers than ever, with a growing number of consumers now checking the packaging before purchasing their beauty must-haves.
This pushes sustainability to the top of the criteria checklist for brands and packaging manufacturers. Over the two day conference, sessions will address key issues when it comes to packaging and sustainability, and provide inspiration for delegates to walk away brimming with new ideas.
Product packaging is an integral part of a customer’s journey with your brand. Today's consumer will subconsciously scrutinise every piece of packaging they come across, and their opinion will be a determining factor on whether or not they make that purchase.
Packaging is a reflection of the brand, so if brands want to create products that are environmentally friendly, their packaging needs to reflect this. Yet often packaging is an oversight with many brands opting for the most convenient option, rather than a method that best reflects their brand values.
A rebrand is a good way to overhaul a brand image and strengthen their message.
Gary Parker from Intertek will provide a step-by-step guide on how brands can move to sustainable packaging with ease in response to consumer demand. He will provide delegates with the survival guide for sustainable packaging from source to end-product.
Packaging Live will also address how brands can prolong the life cycle of their packaging with a session on reuse and upcycling. More than 120 billion units of packaging are produced every year by the global cosmetics industry, and much of this ends up in a landfill. Learn innovative ways in which your packaging can be re-used post-product to reduce the impact on the environment.
The final session within sustainability takes a look at how brands can ensure that their products won’t end up in the ocean. Even today, cosmetic products continue to be made using materials that are hard to recycle. Learn more about what happens at the end of a product’s life cycle and changes you can make to ensure sustainability right through to the end.
CB Talking Trends
Packaging Live will also explore the latest and upcoming trends in sessions entitled "CB Innovation" within beauty packaging that will influence the market to 2020 and beyond.
A session led by Nick Vaus from Free The Birds will look at developing packaging for e-commerce and social media. Sustainability efforts and the rise of e-commerce are leading the way for influencing product development in the packaging sector, according to a recent study by market intelligence agency Mintel. Tap into this trend and learn how you can use your packaging to build customer loyalty.
Technology and packaging. The cosmetics world is a competitive and lucrative marketplace. In order to keep product design innovative and simultaneously be able to connect with consumers on a more substantial level, technology is being utilised on packaging now more than ever before. Learn the latest advancements in technology packaging within the cosmetics industry and be inspired with new ideas.
Ocean plastics: a case study. It is predicted that the ocean will contain more plastic than fish by 2050, and the beauty industry has a name for being a key culprit in plastic waste. Now more brands are starting to take responsibility and are looking at ways they can prevent plastic waste. This session will involve a case study looking at how brands are leading the fight against ocean plastics.
Innovation at its finest is the use of smart packaging. The smart packaging sector is estimated to be worth almost $40bn in 2020, and RFID tags are a key contributor as more consumers and retailers than ever before are using the technology. Learn more about smart packaging concepts and how you can use RFID to your benefit.
Material World
It wouldn’t be a packaging conference without some material focused sessions. Be sure that the materials you are using are genuinely good for the environment by attending the bio-based materials, biodegradable and greenwashing session. There’s a lot of misinformation about which materials can be recycled, and this session will clear everything up.
The global sale of body care products is forecast to reach $100bn by 2020. Yet many of these products come packaged in single-use plastic, and consumer demand for sustainable materials presents an obstacle for manufacturers.
While more brands are opting for natural materials instead, there are complications when it comes to recycling due to the combination of materials used. One way to overcome this is by swapping to a simple, recyclable option. PET is a reusable and recyclable plastic with many uses and is great for packaging cosmetics and body care products.
Last but certainly not least, the final session is dedicated to shedding a light on where packaging comes from. To be fully sustainable, every aspect of the product life cycle must be considered. This includes where raw materials have come from and how they are grown and manufactured and how brands can reduce their carbon footprint .
Sufficient materials can often be found much closer to home than is realised, and this session will take a look at how brands can source materials locally.
