The cosmetics world’s love affair with all things natural shows no sign of diminishing. Allied to this are the concepts of sustainability and green chemistry: the focus of this article.
Green chemistry is based on a set of principles that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products. It includes environmentally improved routes; new, greener and safer chemicals and materials; and the use of sustainable resources and biotech-derived alternatives to chemistry-based solutions[1].
Sustainable synthesis
Fermentation processes are encouraged as alternatives to traditional chemical synthesis. For example, Active Concepts uses green algae to produce an array of unique bioactive complex lipids and fatty acids, which it incorporates in AcquaSeal Algae (INCI: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii extract).
