A member of the EU since 2007, Bulgaria is a country rich in natural resources whose beauty industry seems to be back on track after a couple of uncertain years. Nadia Di Martino reports on the country’s approach to its savvy consumers
Nikolina Uzunova, director of the Bulgarian National Association for Essential Oils, Perfumery & Cosmetics (BNAEOPC) says that 2010 saw the value of the C&T industry in the country fall to 49.1m.
He adds: “Compared to 2008, production of toothpastes, perfumes and toilet waters diminished and the production of hair care and shaving preparations slipped too.”
Positive signs however came from exports of perfumes and cosmetics which were up by 9.3% and 20.3% respectively in value terms by 2010, according to Uzunova. The majority of the cosmetics and toothpaste production in Bulgaria is for export purposes while data available for 2010 shows an increase in domestic sales of shampoos, which were up by 24.4%.
