Biotechnology is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for pharmaceuticals and lab experiments, it is now a driving force behind the evolution of skin care and beauty.

Offering a blend of sustainability, efficacy and scientific precision, biotech beauty is reshaping the industry at an unprecedented pace.

Brands and manufacturers are increasingly turning to biotech-derived ingredients to enhance product performance, reduce environmental impact, and cater to the growing consumer demand for transparency and efficacy.

But what does this mean for the future of skin care? Leading industry experts weigh in…

Biotechnology: The new frontier in beauty

Biotechnology, in essence, is the use of biological systems to develop and produce new ingredients, from lab-grown actives to fermented compounds that mimic natural processes.

While biotech has long been used in medicine, its impact on beauty is now becoming more apparent.

“From a sustainability standpoint, biotech allows formulators to innovate without taking from nature and the environment,” explains Suzanne Scott, Global Associate Beauty Director at SEEN Group.

“It reduces costs across sourcing, transporting and processing ingredients, while enabling cruelty-free alternatives to traditionally animal-derived ingredients like squalane.”

Beyond sustainability, biotech is driving innovations in biomimicry, creating ingredients that replicate the skin’s natural functions.
