Plastic still dominates in cosmetic packaging, largely due to its affordability, but the use of more eco-friendly materials are rising.

Among them is paperboard, which has experienced significant growth according to Mintel, while traditional plastics and multi-layer boards are steadily declining, signalling a broader shift in cosmetic packaging trends.

“Enhancements in functionality of paper-based packaging, plus brands leaning into sustainable packaging, have made paperboard a trending material in the beauty category,” Lauren Ryder, Associate Principal, Global Packaging at Mintel tells Cosmetics Business.
