Biotin is commonly known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H. It was first discovered as a nutrient required by yeast in 1901 as part of a compound known then as ‘bios’[1].
It was later named and determined as an essential vitamin from as early as 1927, where its deficiency was shown to cause dermatitis and hair loss[2].
While it is a chiral vitamin, it is the D-form of biotin which is biologically active and occurs naturally.
