Squalane is a plant-derived emollient which is biomimetic with our skin’s naturally produced squalene.

It is typically produced by hydrogenation of the unsaponifiable portion of olive oil followed by purification; but may be obtained from other plant sources as well.

Squalane as a cosmetic ingredient should not be confused with the material squalene, which was obtained from shark liver oil and is no longer used as a cosmetic ingredient.

Our skin naturally produces squalene to maintain moisture, suppleness and to provide barrier protection against Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL).
