What is Palm Oil and why is it used?
Palm Oil and Palm Kernel Oil are used as a base in a huge amount of cosmetic ingredients. Palm
has high oil content; each fruit contains about 50% oil. In global agricultural terms, this is beneficial
as Palm takes up less land to farm. However, in developing countries Palm has become a cash
crop resulting in native rainforest being cleared to make way for Palm plantations.
The environmental impact of Palm oil as farmed presently is significant. It is linked to:
- Biodiversity loss
- Soil degradation
- Issues with land rights and indigenous displacement
- Extinction of Orang-utans
Formulated by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO),
Green Palm Sustainability is a scheme supported by WWF, Oxfam
and the Rainforest Alliance.
Derek Herrmann, Technical & Sales Director, explains:
“Whilst better managed plantations and oil palm smallholdings
serve as models of sustainable agriculture, there are serious
concerns that not all palm oil is produced sustainably. That’s
why we have decided to support the Green Palm programme,
with the result that as from 2011 our products can
bear the Green Palm Sustainability logo.”
