Over the last century, Steiner Leisure Ltd has made a radical transformation from a single unit, west London hair salon into a multi-million dollar, global skin care, spa and education provider, with a strong presence both at sea and on land. Lucy Copp reports
Stepping on board a cruise ship today means so much more than just visiting new places, it’s about receiving a full ‘at sea’ experience and, importantly, translating that experience back onto dry land – and one spa sector heavyweight knows this better than anyone else.
Today Steiner Leisure Ltd dominates the onboard spa sector, its roots firmly anchored in the cruise industry since 1960. However, over the last 50 years, its prowess has also moved ashore and today it is a major player in the land-based spa sector, boasts prestigious post secondary education programmes and recently acquired laser hair removal company, Ideal Image, with treatment centres spanning 28 US states.
But finding its legs in such a competitive market was no mean feat and the company makes no qualms about how it got to where it is today – as well as its ambitions to keep growing. Leonard Fluxman, president and ceo of Steiner Leisure, tells ECM: “Today, the company looks very different. Each of the segments is operated by incredible management that we have picked and grown over the years. While it’s still a legacy business, which is the cruise business, the biggest of them all, we are developing from significantly fast growing companies, both in the personal care side of the business as well as in education and laser hair removal.”
