Beauty giants the Body Shop, L’Oréal, Lush and M&S are in contention to be named the UK’s most animal-friendly C&T company the RSPCA has announced. The RSPCA Good Business Awards, sponsored by SPC, recognise ethical business approaches to animal welfare from both small and large C&T companies.

Finalists in the small company category include last year’s winner Bulldog, a male grooming company with strict policies around the inclusion of ingredients from animal sources and an informative website; Faith in Nature, a long-established company with a real commitment to animal welfare; and The Gamrie Goat, a company that makes natural soaps using the goats’ milk from their own small herd and which is committed to animal welfare and innovation in farming.

The large company category will pit Lush, which has implemented animal welfare schemes and conservation projects – including a palm oil initiative to help save endangered orangutans in Indonesia and Malaysia – against L’Oréal and M&S. L’Oréal has given extensive support in researching alternatives to animal testing, seen in the R&D of its Episkin tissue engineering platform, while M&S is participating in a Defra project which aims to develop non-animal toxicity testing methodologies for the risk assessment of chemicals.

According to the RSPCA, 2008’s winner the Body Shop has continued to support groups campaigning for and researching into alternative testing methods and understands the benefits of labeling products and providing consumers with clear information both at the point of sale and also on their website.

The awards will be presented on 7 October during a ceremony held at One Marylebone, London. Tickets are available from the RSPCA Good Business Awards team on 0300 123 0488 or online.
