Because of public misconceptions and marketing pressures about the preservatives that have safely protected cosmetics for many decades, formulators are constantly seeking alternatives. This feature shall present some possible answers to the problem of providing cosmetic products with adequate preservation within the confines of current EU legislation while conforming to current marketing trends.
Less is more
The starting point is to look at existing preservatives of proven efficacy and examine whether they can be made more efficient so that less is required. This may be achieved by better solubilising into the aqueous phase or by finding materials that appear to work in synergy.
