A new report has emerged to highlight that organic farming can indeed help tackle the growing climate change problem, as well as aid world food security issues.
According to a four year study by The International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development (IAASTD) organic agriculture, used to create many organic cosmetic products, has the ability to not only protect soils but also to conserve wildlife. Over 400 scientists, 30 governments and NGOs were involved in creating the report and concluded that industrial agriculture was ‘too narrowly focused’ and that a more holistic systems-oriented approach to farming was needed to better help the environment.
Doubts were also raised by the authors of the report regarding claims by the GM industries that they are the solution to poverty, world hunger or climate change.
Robin Maynard, campaigns director for the Soil Association said, "This is exactly what organic farming at its best achieves - delivering a greater variety and number of wildlife species; and because it doesn't depend on vast quantities of expensive agrichemicals is more accessible and adaptable to smaller scale poorer farms in developing countries."
