French fashion designer and founder of the Mugler fragrance house Thierry Mugler has passed away at the age of 73.
A statement via Mugler’s LinkedIn page read: “It is with deep sadness that the House of Mugler announces the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler.
“A visionary whose imagination as a couturier, perfumer and image-maker empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger everyday.”
Formerly a ballet dancer, Mugler was a powerful figure in fashion during the 1980s and more recently dressed the likes of Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.
Alongside his fashion career, however, the creative advisor developed a hugely successful fragrance maison.
In 2019, Mugler was acquired by fellow French group L’Oréal when the operations of Clarins Group’s fragrance division was taken over.
His brand’s most successful fragrances came in the form of Angel, Alien and Aura.
Despite launching in 2005, Mugler’s Alien scent was among Britain’s top ten most popular fragrances of 2021 by The Fragrance Shop.
Coming in fourth, the amber woody fragrance for women was named ahead of Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium and behind Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle.
Dozens of famous faces have also been commissioned for Mugler’s marketing materials, including Willow Smith, Eva Mendes and Georgia May Jagger.
