Reforms have been approved by the European Parliament to a revised EU-wide ecolabel system, making it tougher for personal care product manufacturers to secure regarding the use of environmentally damaging chemicals. Soaps and shampoos are currently covered by the existing system, although new products – such as cosmetics – could be added in the future under the new regime.

An informal agreement with EU ministers means that parliament’s decision should fast-track the changes through the EU legislative machine. And although the reforms are designed to make EU ecolabelled products more environment friendly, one change would help cosmetics manufacturers, namely a requirement for companies to reduce animal testing to secure an eco-label – which the personal care sector does automatically.

MEPs also claim to have simplified the system to ease red tape burdens. “The overall objective of the proposed regulation is to promote products with a reduced environmental impact through the use of [this] voluntary scheme,” said a parliamentary communiqué.
