Bangladesh’s beauty business is booming as Abu Anas reports from Dhaka
Bangladesh’s fast growing economy is developing a robust and booming personal care product market. Mosaddeq Hossain, owner of a general store at the Shagoria Bazaar in the Hatiya sub district, near Chittagong, recalls that ten years ago there was almost no demand for his stocks of Sunsilk shampoo.
Today, with Bangladesh’s annual economic growth averaging 6.1%, Hossain needs to place purchase orders every week to make sure his shelves are sufficiently stacked to meet growing demand. He has two racks dedicated to personal care products.
He told SPC: “Back then, dozens of Sunsilk shampoos languished on my shelves for six months straight. I had no customers but things have changed so fast. Now I can sell two dozen a day.”
