Looks to broaden customer base with four modern scents

British perfume house Grossmith is hoping to broaden its customer base with the introduction of its Black Label Collection, the heritage brand’s first collection of newly created fragrances since it was acquired by husband and wife team Simon and Amanda Brooke and re-launched in 2009.

The line comprises four fragrances across a range of scent families. Floral Veil is a white floral fragrance, which contrasts a heart of geranium, rose, ylang ylang, tuberose and vanilla with vibrant citrus top notes. Amelia, is a soft, feminine floral which opens with neroli and osmanthus. The rose, peony, jasmine and amber heart develops into notes of patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver and cashmere musks for a long lasting base. The third fragrance, Golden Chypre, has effervescent citrus top notes combined with spicy cardamom and nutmeg. Rose, geranium and heliotrope mid notes provide a balance to the vibrant opening, while patchouli adds an earthy quality. The fourth and final scent in the collection is Saffron Rose. Described as rich and opulent, it opens with spicy notes of saffron and cinnamon supported by rose, myrrh, oud and tobacco, while creamy woods, labdanum and deep animalic accords make for a luxurious dry down.

Brooke acquired and revived the dormant company with the help of fragrance manufacturer Robertet following the discovery that not only was he the great-great grandson of founder John Grossmith but that a distant cousin still owned the original formula books. The first Grossmith fragrances launched under the Brookes’ ownership – Hasu-no-Hana, Phul-Nana and Sham-el-Nessim – are faithful copies of the company’s original ones. But with the exception of two celebratory scents inspired by Grossmith’s historical royal warrants – Betrothal and Diamond Jubilee Bouquet – the brand has not (until now) issued any original fragrances.

Fragrances in the Black Label Collection are £150 for 50ml and £215 for 100ml with the exception of Saffron Rose, which is £175 for 50ml and £250 for 100ml.
