This year, at in-cosmetics global, the French-heritage raw material supplier Gattefossé proudly announces the launch of Noxifense, a groundbreaking active ingredient set to transform the booming sensitive skin market with a comprehensive 360° approach.
The skin, the body’s most exposed organ, is highly susceptible to environmental stressors collectively known as the exposome. This exposure disrupts the skin's delicate balance by triggering two intertwined biological pathways: oxidation and inflammation. Recently theorised as oxi-inflammation, this phenomenon primarily affects epidermal lipids and is considered a root cause of heightened skin sensitivity.
“The sensitive skin market is among the most dynamic segments in skincare, driven by increasingly harsh environmental factors such as UV exposure, pollution, and stress. Sensitive skin spans all skin types, making soothing cosmetic products the new industry standard.
Over the past years, our research team has delved into oxi-inflammation, leading to the development of Noxifense - a novel solution that addresses skin sensitivity by protecting essential skin lipids from harmful oxi-inflammatory environments” says Laurie CANEL, Product marketing leader, active ingredients.
Sea Buckthorn: a potent anti-oxi-inflammatory powerhouse
Noxifense harnesses the power of sea buckthorn, a versatile plant used in food, traditional medicine, or horticulture for at least 1,200 years.
This particularly resilient shrub thrives in extreme conditions due to its richness in protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory polyphenols.
Embracing upcycling principles, Gattefossé transforms the overlooked leaves sourced from a family-owned organic orchard in Quebec, Canada.
A streamlined, energy-efficient extraction process was developed to maximise the bioactive compounds. The final extract is rich in flavonol glycosides and ellagitannins, key molecules that contribute to the soothing properties of Noxifense
The ingredient is 100% natural, organic-certified, and preservative-free.
The protection of epidermal lipids from exposome assaults
Noxifense excels in calming the oxi-inflammatory environment caused by exposome-related stressors at the epidermal lipid level.
Lipids are vital protective components, yet their complex structure and organisation make them challenging to study using existing in vitro models.
“Our exhaustive study program investigates the entire oxi-inflammation process affecting epidermal lipids, from the stratum corneum to the keratinocyte membrane. We developed innovative and relevant models that accurately simulate lipid peroxidation in the stratum corneum and viable epidermis under various external aggressions (UV, pollution, cigarette smoke).
These models were essential in demonstrating Noxifense’s ability to disrupt the oxi-inflammation cycle” explains Chloé Lorion, Research & Development Engineer in skin biology.
Noxifense™ effectively breaks the oxi-inflammation vicious cycle through a dual action. It inhibits the NF-kB pathway to prevent inflammation while enhancing the skin’s antioxidant defence system, significantly reducing intracellular ROS levels.
A shot of serenity for the most sensitive skins
In a clinical study conducted on Asian volunteers with sensitive skin, Noxifense significantly reduced stinging sensations, soothed the skin, and improved overall skin comfort, texture, and tone, helping consumers say goodbye to redness and hello to smooth, radiant skin.
