Foundations are entering a new era as the beauty industry moves away from cyclosiloxanes.
New restrictions on D5 (decamethylcyclopentasiloxane) and D6 (dodecamethylcyclohexasiloxane) in the EU will come into effect from 6 June 2027.
Already restricted in rinse-off products to a maximum concentration of 0.1%, D5 will have the same limitations for leave- on products, and this 0.1% maximum concentration will apply to D6 for rinse-off and leave-on products from next year too.

“D5 and D6 have been widely used in foundations because they provide exceptional spreadability, a lightweight, silky feel and excellent pigment distribution,” explain Daniela Del Ciotto and Martin Mackenzie-Smith, owners of The Cosmetic Experts.
“As they evaporate after application, they leave a smooth, non-greasy finish while contributing to long wear and a soft-focus effect.”
They have been common across both premium and mass-market foundations, particularly in long-lasting formulations, they add.
