Europe takes Sweden to task on excessive demands
Sweden threatened with legal action over cosmetics directive
The European Commission has sent a legal final warning to the Swedish government that it should reduce controls imposed on cosmetics companies selling products in Sweden, or maybe face a European Court of Justice (ECJ) case.
Brussels alleges that Sweden is breaking the EU cosmetic directive by requiring cosmetics companies to secure market approval for products already sold legally in other EU member states. It also demands companies supply more product information for market surveillance purposes than is mandated by the directive.
“Sweden has exceeded its obligations under the cosmetics directive in a way that hinders the functioning of the [EU] market,” said the Commission.
