EU scientists say nano titanium dioxide in sunscreens generally safe

May be used at a concentration of up to 25% as a UV filter, provided it has a series of characteristics

The use of nano-scale titanium dioxide in liquid sunscreens is generally safe according to the European Union’s (EU) scientific committee on consumer safety (SCCS). In a detailed report, the committee said the nano-chemical can be used at a concentration up to 25% as a UV filter, if it has a series of characteristics. These include that these nano-particles are in rutile form, or rutile with up to 15% anatase; have an average particle size of 30-100nm; and do not have a substantially high photocatalytic activity. The committee however opposed using this filter in “applications that might lead to inhalation exposure (such as powders or sprayable products)”.
