UK aerosol filling figures increase by 9%
BAMA announces nearly 1.4 billion aerosols filled in 2011
Aerosol fillings in the UK increased by 9% this year, latest figures from the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) have shown.
Nearly 1.4 billion aerosols were filled in 2011 compared with just under 1.3 billion in 2010. Most aerosol sectors showed an increase, with air fresheners and personal care proving to be key drivers of growth in the sector.
In personal care, antiperspirants, deodorants and body sprays rose from 593 million to 647.6 million units filled, an increase of 9%, while hairsprays and hair mousses rose from 81.7 million to 89.8 million, an increase of 10%. Sun tan products and bronzing aerosols, a relatively small category, saw 160% growth, while shaving products remained stable with an increase to 199.6 million units, up 1%. Perfumes and colognes performed particularly well, nearly doubling from 5.1 million units to 10 million units, up 96%.
The air freshener category also performed well with 18% growth, while shoe and leather cleaners increased from 1.8 million to 2.1 million units. The only categories to see a decrease were insecticides and industrial products, which fell 20% and 11% respectively.
Dr John Morris, the newly appointed chief executive of BAMA, said: “These latest figures are particularly pleasing and it is splendid that BAMA can report such strong growth in its 50th anniversary year. The sector shows not just resilience but firm growth. To have achieved such growth when the financial climate and consumer spending make for tough trading is testament to the strength of the aerosol format, which deliver products efficiently and sustainably.”
