Pantone has the annual chosen colour since 2001, forecasting design trends from beauty to interiors

Pantone’s colour of the year 2018 is a blue-based purple called Ultra Violet.

The colour is said to reflect the prominence of spirituality, visionary thinking and the mysteries of the future.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come.”

Iconic musicians such as Prince, David Bowie and Jimi Hendrix were noted for bringing the shade into pop culture.

Last year, Pantone chose Greenery as the colour of the year to symbolise new beginnings.

Meanwhile, in 2016, two colours were unveiled, Rose Quartz and Serenity, to celebrate gender fluidity.

The company also says the colour of the year has come to mean more than what’s trending in the world of design.

Instead, it aims to reflect the current emotional state of affairs.

“As individuals around the world become more fascinated with colour and realise its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use colour to inspire and influence,” said Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute.

When applied to beauty trends, Pantone predicts the colour will be integrated into ombre and blended looks.

Matte purple is expected to dominate lips and nails, while soft metallics will be used on the eyes.
