Beauty and personal care is a crowded and fast-changing marketplace, and as such brands require expert guidance and updates on the latest market trends to keep ahead of the competition.
The team that brought you the popular Cosmetics Business Regulatory Summit and Cosmetics Business Packaging Live events are now introducing an even greater level of industry insight during a comprehensive two-day conference, taking place 13-14 May at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam.
Tickets purchased by 28 February will receive a 25% early bird discount.
The conference agenda at Cosmetics Business Live will consist of four ‘streams’ focusing on beauty regulations, ingredients, packaging and retail.
The packaging stream will be introduced and moderated by Cosmetics Business Editor, Lucy Tandon Copp, and will begin with a keynote reviewing the primary packaging trends that you should know about in 2020 and beyond.
Problems & solutions
E-commerce is very much driving the future of beauty retail, which means that beauty packaging must adjust to better suit e-tail requirements, both in terms of appearance and resistance to damage in transit. Invinci is a leader in 360-degree Amazon specialisation, and Managing Director Sebastian Quevedo-Busch will provide his top tips for packaging beauty goods for e-commerce.
A big concern for many beauty players is protecting their signature style and branding; beauty, just like fashion, suffers from ‘dupe culture’ and Cosmetics Business Live will advise you on the best ways to develop your beauty pack designs while protecting them from copycats.
‘Packaging pain points: Maximising the user experience’, meanwhile, will look at those micro-aggressions that prevent use of a product being a 100% pleasurable one, and will delve into the ways pack design can optimise the user experience on a subconscious level.
Historically, the beauty industry has not really designed products, packs or retail sites with much consideration of visual impairment, for example, or low dexterity. This must change. And in her talk, ‘Avoiding ‘ableism’: Accessible packaging for use by all’, Sumaira Latif, Company Accessibility Leader at Procter & Gamble, will inform delegates of the steps that they can take to make cosmetics packaging inclusive and accessible to everyone.
Sustainability corner
A major dilemma surrounding beauty packaging is: what is our impact on the planet? This is becoming a leading issue for consumers and brands alike, and the seminar programme at Cosmetics Business Live has been carefully curated to meet as many sustainable packaging angles as possible.
Intertek provides product testing and certification services expertise; its Head of Sustainability, Gary Parker, will discuss the circular economy with a specific focus on packaging in ‘A product lifecycle that won’t cost the earth’.
His talk will be followed by ‘One man’s trash? How to upcycle in packaging’, delivered by tubes manufacturer Neopac.
Plastics are currently somewhat demonised due to wider knowledge of the problem presented by ocean plastics. However, there is more than one type of plastic, and the presentation ‘Not all plastics are equal: What should I use?’ will delve into the respective benefits of recyclable and/or recycled content plastic, bioplastics and even biodegradable plastics.
Also on the materials front, Eastman’s Renske Gores is set to talk on chemical recycling, explaining exactly what it is and why it might represent the future of recycled materials.
The topic ‘Refillables: Are they for you?’ led by Jo Chidley (Beauty Kitchen) will address the implementation of a successful, large-scale refill initiative, the challenges and the environmental benefits, to let delegates conclude whether this is an approach they can apply to their own products.
A panel discussion ‘Should we all get naked?’ will round off day one. Barb Paldus (Codex Beauty), Grace Forsyth (New Flag) and Gary Parker (Intertek) will join other experts to discuss the viability of dispensing with packaging entirely. So, feel free to come to the event with plenty of questions!
The start of day two, meanwhile, will see Tom Szaky, CEO & founder of TerraCycle, a global leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams, take to the stage to present on ‘Striking the right balance in sustainability’, which again will enable delegates to fully appreciate the full spectrum of what is ‘sustainable’ in beauty packaging, to help them decide which approach is best for their brand.
Looking good
As well as being sustainable, beauty packaging should also entice and inspire consumers, acting as a visual cue to the experience inside the pack. This will also be an important angle at Cosmetics Business Live.
‘Labelling & decoration’, delivered by Jan Hasselblatt of UPM Raflatac, will provide insight into the most popular and the newest decorative and labelling methods available to beauty brands, as well as popular finishes for 2020-21.
Meanwhile Johnny and Pauline Paterson of Dr.PAWPAW will deliver ‘Creating a prize-winning product in the age of social media’, a platform where visual representation and flair must come to the fore for brands to succeed.
