Natural and organic skincare company Nude Brands has lost an initial court bid to prevent fashion designer Stella McCartney from launching her new scent Stella Nude.

Natural and organic skincare company Nude Brands has lost an initial court bid to prevent fashion designer Stella McCartney from launching her new scent Stella Nude.

The fragrance will launch in the UK next week despite Nude requesting an interim injunction to prevent the launch of the fragrance after it was decided that ‘massive disruption’ would be done to license owner L’Oréal’s business, outweighing damage to Nude Brands by refusing to grant permission to use the Nude trademark. A full trademark trial will take place next year.

Nude, which manufactures natural and organic skin care products was created by Ali Hewson and organic retail chain Fresh & Wild founder Bryan Meehan. It successfully registered the pan-European Community Trademark (CTM) for the word Nude to be used as a trademark specifically for perfumery and skin care products. The company said in May 2008 it was asked for permission to use the trademark Nude for a Stella McCartney perfume, which it refused.

“Nude considers the launch of ‘Stella Nude’ by L’Oréal to be a clear infringement of Nude’s trademark, “ the company said in a statement.
