Cosmetics and personal care brands are rallying to meet consumer demand for hygiene products as demand for hand sanitiser skyrockets in the fight to prevent the spread of Covid-19

As the world continues to rally in the fight against the coronavirus (Covid-19), demand for antibacterial ingredients – particularly hand sanitisers – is higher than ever as consumers are increasingly vigilant about their hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.

In a response to the ever-surging demand, which has seen HMRC fast track denatured alcohol applications for hand sanitiser, UK-based natural oils supplier O&3 is offering a variety of natural antibacterial ingredients to help personal care suppliers meet concerned consumers' needs during this uncertain time.

Jennifer Wood, Chief Executive at O&3, said: “With such attention on hygiene, we have seen an increased interest in natural ingredients with antibacterial properties, which can be both effective and kind to skin.

“From aloe vera gel to tea tree, lemon and peppermint essential oils, there are many options for creating products with natural ingredients, which will smell great and keep skin moisturised and protected.”

For brands looking to develop effective hand sanitisers, O&3 recommends combining aloe vera gel, known for its antibacterial, soothing and moisturising properties, with natural essential oils.

Said to be the perfect base for hand sanitiser, the company offers Aloe Vera Cosmetic Clear Gel, which is designed to dry quickly and sink into the skin easily without leaving a sticky residue.

Meanwhile, essential oil options O&3 recommends include tea tree oil, which is well-known for its antiseptic qualities; lemon oil, which has been used in natural medicine for centuries to treat infectious diseases and also offers an energising and uplifting scent; and peppermint oil, which creates a cooling sensation on the skin and offers an additional layer of protection when used in hand sanitiser thanks to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Speaking about O&3's ongoing efforts to meet industry needs, Wood added: “Over the last few weeks, our focus has been on supporting the O&3 family and our clients’ business needs during this time of uncertainty.

“As always, our aim is to be agile and work fast, so we’re working as hard as we can to keep our ingredients readily available, and support our colleagues, customers and communities across the industry.”
