Japanese beauty brand Shiseido has been selected for the United Nations Global Compact 100 (GC 100), a stock index launched by the United Nations Global Compact in partnership with research firm Sustainalytics. Among the UN Global Compact signatory companies, 100 have been selected for inclusion in the GC 100, based on their adherence to the Global Compact’s ten principles as well as evidence of leadership commitment and consistent baseline profitability.
The UN Global Compact was suggested in 1999 at the World Economic Forum in Davos by then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to address issues stemming from globalisation. It was officially launched in July 2000 at the UN headquarters. Signatories are required to support ten principles in the four areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anticorruption, as well as participate in efforts to build a global framework for sustainable growth. There are currently around 8,000 signatory entities (about 1,000 of which are publicly listed companies) spread across 145 countries.
The GC 100 index has one other cosmetics member, L’Oréal, and five other Japanese members: Toppan Printing, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Ricoh and JSR.
